Two paths connect a laptop to public websites and a network of community services.

Tor and I2P come up whenever people talk about private browsing. Both route traffic through other computers to make connections harder to trace. Neither is a magic invisibility switch, and they aren’t interchangeable.

The useful question is what you want to reach. A regular website? An onion service? A community running inside I2P? That choice matters more than picking a winner.

Where Tor excels

For a beginner who wants to browse the ordinary web, Tor Browser is the easier starting point. Install it, connect, and browse. For regular websites, traffic travels through relays and leaves through an exit relay. The website sees the exit’s IP address rather than yours. Tor relay guide.

Tor also supports .onion services. Those connections stay inside Tor and don’t use an exit relay. They protect the connection between reader and service without exposing the service’s public IP address. Our Tor guide shows how to open Monero Love this way.

The downside is friction. Some websites challenge or block Tor connections. Pages may load slowly, and Tor isn’t a good fit for ordinary torrent clients. The Tor Project warns that those clients can leak identifying information and burden the network. Keep HTTPS enabled when visiting regular websites: Tor’s encryption doesn’t replace the website’s encryption beyond the exit. Tor Browser guidance.

Where I2P excels

I2P is built around services communicating inside its own network. Think websites, chat, and file sharing between I2P participants. It uses separate inbound and outbound tunnels, rather than sending both directions along the same circuit. I2P introduction.

That makes I2P appealing for running an internal service or using applications designed for its network. I2PSnark, for example, supports BitTorrent within I2P. That doesn’t mean sending an ordinary public torrent through an arbitrary proxy is safe.

The trade-off is setup and patience. You need I2P software and an appropriately configured browser or application. A new router needs time to find peers and settle in. Sharing bandwidth helps the network, so check the settings if your connection is metered.

I2P can reach ordinary websites through an outproxy, but that depends on a separate operator and isn’t its main strength. Running I2P does not automatically make your computer an internet exit. I2P FAQ.
